Discover the biodiversity of Val Trebbia, an Apennine valley with a mediterranean climate and a unique geology, less than a two-hour drive south of Milan.

Described by Ernest Hemingway as “the most beautiful valley in the world”, Val Trebbia is an accessible valley in the northern Apennines, characterised by a hilly landscape with a strong Mediterranean influence.

Species-rich dry grasslands, home to several orchids and many thermophilous species such as hoopoe, bee-eater, as well as the Italian three-toed skink (Chalcides chalcides) and the alien-looking conehead mantis (Empusa pennata), are abruptly interrupted by dark, dramatic rock outcrops rich in heavy metals, known as ophiolites, where a highly specialised flora grows. 

Val Trebbia is one of our favourite places to visit in spring, when most flowers are in bloom, birds are in full breeding activity, and the mild temperatures are particularly pleasant.
