These mountains provide refuge for some of the most iconic wildlife of the Italian Apennines, including the Apennine chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata), grey wolf (Canis lupus italicus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), and the rare Orsini’s viper (Vipera ursinii), one of Europe’s most specialised and threatened reptiles.

During spring and early summer, the landscape comes alive with colourful blooms, culminating in the famous flowering of the Castelluccio Plain. The extensive mountain grasslands support a remarkable diversity of orchids, butterflies and other species adapted to the harsh conditions of the high Apennines, while golden eagles soar above the cliffs and valleys.
