The land of bears, wolves, deer and chamois
Just less than two hours from Rome lies the wild heart of Italy, where gentle mountains covered with beech forests and open meadows are home to bears, wolves, deer, golden eagles and chamois.
In this place, observing wildlife is different from almost anywhere else in Italy. More than a hundred years of protected nature have shaped the landscape and influenced the behaviour of the animals, which are often more accustomed to being observed by humans, even just a few steps from roads and rural villages.
In the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, it is possible to observe one of the rarest bear subspecies in the world: the Marsican brown bear (Ursus arctos marsicanus), with only around 80 individuals estimated to survive in the wild. Alongside them, you can find Italian wolves (Canis lupus italicus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), Apennine chamois (Rupicapra pyraenaica ornata) on the mountain ridges, and many other animals, including mustelids, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

When to go?
For a better chance of seeing bears, spring, summer and autumn are the best periods. During this time, they feed on grass, fruit and berries and are often active in open areas along the valley floor. For wolves, winteris the recommended period, but good sightings are also possible during other seasons, thanks to their high density throughout the area. September is the month of the red deer rut, when you can observe large herds and males competing for females, while November is the mating season for chamois, offering the opportunity to watch them chasing each other across the mountain ridges.
Tell us when you will be in Rome , Naples or in Abruzzo, and we will suggest the best plan for your wildlife tour.
What we offer

Deer Rut in Abruzzo
Experience one of the most spectacular wildlife events of the Italian Apennines: the red deer rut in Abruzzo National Park. At the beginning of autumn, the forests and mountain clearings of the park become the stage for the red deer (Cervus elaphus) rut. As evening approaches, the deep roars of adult males echo across the valleys, while stags compete for access to females and defend their harems from rivals. Our tour takes place during the best hours of the day, exploring selected areas where red deer gather during the breeding season. Using binoculars and spotting scopes, we will observe their
