In the central Italian Alps, lies a lesser-known mountain range with one of the highest rates of flora endemism in the entire Alpine region. Nestled between Lake Como and Lake Iseo, the ‘Orobie Bergamasche’ or Bergamasque Alps are a true hotspot of biodiversity, where tourism has yet to arrive and many massifs and valleys still preserve the authentic character of the breathtaking alpine environments.

In late spring and throughout all the summer, hundreds of alpine flowers adorn the landscape, alpine grasslands and rocky slopes become the breeding ground of many bird species such as northern wheatear, wall creeper, rock trush and the rare corn crake. In these environments marmots and chamois are abundant, and for those interested in herpetofauna, these habitats are also home to the Italian adder (Vipera berus marasso) and the viviparous lizard (Zootoca vivipara).
